Sssshhhhh - Cookie was right

Don't tell my friend Cookie - but...I think she might have been right about something.

I'm just contemplating starting my christmas shopping and got to thinking about Cookie's last rant. (http://titacookie.blogspot.com/2007/11/cant-buy-me-love.html)
Why do people give gift certificates as presents? I mean - I give you $50 you can spend at this store and you give me $50 I can spend at some other store. What's the point? That's it - this christmas will be a gift certificate free zone!
Some of my family is harder to shop for than others, but damn it - if I can't think of something to get them, I'm just going to give them something I want and assume they have the same taste as me.

This is just going straight to Cookie's head, though - I'm going to have to find 3 or 4 other things that she's wrong about...

I don't know - I have to disagree. Quite frankly at least if you give someone a gift card, they can get themselves something they will like. I'd rather get a gift card for some place than to have some appliance or questionable decorative accent piece that never gets used and just takes up space. Plus, if someone wants something bigger, they can combine gift cards (whoo!). Every year I look forward to Starbucks gift cards because it's the only way I can afford the damn stuff. Fueling my addictions is a lovely way to Merry Christmas!! Though I do agree, some people just fall back on them, and the best presents to give or receive are those that you can tell had a lot of time, effort, and thought put into them. I'm just saying, like almost everything else in life - gift cards have their time and place.

But with a gift card, arn't you just limiting where the person can spend the money you are giving them? Why not just give them cash and say buy your self something nice? Why say 'buy yourself something nice at Home Depot or Chapters or wherever?

Ha! You said I was right! It's on the Interwebs, it's on Official Public Record. I'm glad you are finally seeing the light.

I don't think it matters that much if you're limiting them to a place that has lots of stuff. I mean, at Best Buy you can get electronics, work stuff, movies, music, etc. There would have to be SOMEthing SOMEtime that they would need it for!

That's it. I'm getting you nothing but $1 gift certificates for random locations of my choosing.

I have to agree with Jensies on this... The gift card has it's place. It's like any gift, it requires some thought as to what the person would like. If someone knows I like a particular store and they give me a gift card, then I have to spend money there... So in a way it's like giving me permission to spoil myself! If you give me cash then I may think I need to use is practically. A gift card (i.e. to Sephora, wink nudge nudge, hehehe) tells me that I can spend my money on something totally frivolous that I normally couldn't justify in a million years! Like, $89 on perfume? Normally that's just not in my realm of possibilities!

So I suppose when you think about buying a gift, you need to think about the person (newsflash!)... Are they on a tight budget and therefore a gift card would be a nice treat? I admit, just throwing money or a gift card at someone, especially someone who has plenty of cash, is no gift at all...

Perhaps if you get some stupid gift card and you think it's a stupid gift, then be thankful the bad gift giver got you a stupid gift card, not a stupid gift, cuz obviously they aren't so talented at gift-giving in the first place!

Eeep! That was the longest ramble EVER!!! I'm going now... Bye.
